A reception in appreciation of 2017 Summer Youth Internship providers and sponsors was held on Thursday, November 2, 2017at Miami Dade College-Wolfson Campus. Over 150 people gathered in celebration of the success of the 2017 Summer Youth Internship Program and to thank the sponsors, including the Children’s Trust, Miami-Dade County government, CareerSource South Florida, JP Morgan Chase, Foundation for New Education Initiatives and more than 530 local business and community partners who provided internships for more than 1,800 student interns.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools 2016-17 Board Chairman Dr. Lawrence Feldman and Board Member Dr. Marta Perez were among the honored guests.

Dr. Lupe Ferran Diaz, Executive Director, Department of Career & Technical Education was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Dr. Joaquin Martinez, President of Miami Dade College, Wolfson and Hialeah Campuses, welcomed everyone to Chapman Center on MDC Wolfson campus.

Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho kicked off the evening citing that over $2.25 million was awarded to students as stipend payment from the collaborative Summer Youth Internship grant, and that there are plans for increasing participation three-fold next summer.

Two of the internship providers, Felipe Basulto, Retail Market Manager of TD Bank; and Cindy Eugene, Founder/President of Global Youth Empowerment Movement, spoke about their experiences with internship program.

Another highlight of the evening was recognition of the major sponsors of grant funds for the Summer Youth Internship, including James Haj, President-CEO of The Children’s Trust; Rick Beasley, Executive Director of CareerSource South Florida; Maurice Kemp, Deputy Mayor of Miami-Dade County, Guillermo Castillo, Managing Director and Region Manager, and Middle Market of J.P. Morgan Chase & Company attended the event and spoke to their fellow colleagues.

Also recognized that night, Soley Gonzalez, Community Relations Representative of South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union and the Chair of NAF Academy of Finance Advisory Board and 2017 NAF Fellow for organizing and coordinating direct deposit student stipend payments for internship and Alex Funkhouser, CEO/Developer, Miami.GetMyInterns.org and CEO, SherlockTalent.
